The Leadership Philosophy of Mark House, Managing Director of Beck
Over the past 25 years I have developed my Leadership Philosophy based on my training, experiences and observations. I share this with you so that you know the basis of my actions.
I believe in doing the right thing all the time; choosing the harder “Right” instead of the easier “Wrong”. I believe that 95% of the people in the world know what “Right” is. I believe that good Leaders have followers who do things because they want to, not because they have to. I believe that satisfied employees enjoy their jobs, want to come to work every day and are not frustrated by problems that we create. I believe in being fair and consistent. I believe in having fun and that humor is key to good morale and performance.
I care about you, your family and your future. My job as a leader is to take care of the people who work for me. When leaders take care of people, and that includes helping individuals develop and improve, the organization succeeds. Taking care of you includes telling you what your strengths are as well as where improvement is needed. I believe that everyone should be held accountable. My responsibility includes ensuring our people have what they need to succeed through training, technology and clear communication. Taking care of our people also includes satisfying our customers and creating new ones. New and satisfied customers create new work.
I expect you to tell me the truth and keep me informed. Give me all the news, good and bad. Do not fear bringing the bad news but, when you do, bring a solution as well. Cover me, I will cover you. I expect our managers to develop their people to be better every day. Do the best you can and let me know when you are over your head. If we find out a job is going badly, we must all pitch in right away and that means professional help and emotional support. We are playing a TEAM sport, we win and lose together and every player must contribute for us to be successful.
Hot Buttons
- Be on time for meetings or with assignments, be prepared
- Do not undermine the organization. Gossip is a cancer, when you hear it, speak out against it.
- Cell phones are meant to be used when you do not have access to a normal phone. Turn them off in a meeting.
- I will not tolerate lying or stealing. If you see it and do nothing, your job is at risk.
- Don’t make excuses. Step up, take responsibility, figure out what went wrong and what has to happen differently next time.
- Be considerate of your fellow employees and give others credit.
- Email is a necessary evil, however; face mail or a phone call is the preferred form of communication.
- Meetings that waste time serve no purpose.
- Have an agenda and a purpose
- Finish on time and have closure
- Look and act like a professional
- Volunteer, we owe it to our fellow employees and our community outside of work
