My Leadership Philosophy, by Dan Clark
Shaw Industries

Although I have written this as advice to my team, these are also the standards I have for myself.

Hire good people and give them the freedom and guidance so they can do their job.

For my business I focus on executing and actually completing a small number of initiatives at any one time. Once one is done then you should go to the next one.

Do not hire people with fatal flaws; you cannot fix them.

Develop your replacement(s). ,

The Leadership Philosophy of Dr. Donald J. Welch
President, Merit Network, Inc.

My leadership philosophy is focused on having the best people in a position to provide the most value to the organization. I strive to develop people to reach their full potential, give them a clear set of goals and inspire them to achieve them.

When I think of developing people, it is important to believe that everybody wants to do well. People want to feel that they are honestly doing well. They need truthful feedback. They know their own shortfalls better than you do, and if they think you are just giving false praise, it will actually be a de-motivator. You have to truly tolerate failure. I have never learned much from success and your people must fail to grow. The trick is to not let them fail in fatal ways. On a more day-to-day scale, this means not nit-picking their ideas. You may be able to improve their ideas based on your experience and perspective, but if you regularly do, they will not be inspired to think differently and they won’t grow. You must constantly challenge them in ways that have the potential for success, but success cannot be assured. Finally, people must constantly keep learning and you must help them to do so as well as demand it. You must understand the individual and provide the environment they need to grow professionally. ,

The Leadership Philosophy of Perry Rotella, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Moodys Investor Services

Our organization exists to support our business. All of our activities should be aligned to this end. We are an essential part of the business, but we do not exist separate from the business. As the technology experts, we must lead the business toward the appropriate use of technology. This requires clear non-technical communication with our business partners, critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to challenge our business executives.

I believe first and foremost in honesty and integrity. These values are clearly laid out in our Code of Conduct and should guide all of our actions and decisions. I also value people that are loyal and hard-working. I take my work seriously; however, I believe that we should have fun while doing our work. I also believe in balance. ,

The Leadership Philosophy of Mark House, Managing Director of Beck

Over the past 25 years I have developed my Leadership Philosophy based on my training, experiences and observations. I share this with you so that you know the basis of my actions.

I believe in doing the right thing all the time; choosing the harder “Right” instead of the easier “Wrong”. I believe that 95% of the people in the world know what “Right” is. I believe that good Leaders have followers who do things because they want to, not because they have to. I believe that satisfied employees enjoy their jobs, want to come to work every day and are not frustrated by problems that we create. I believe in being fair and consistent. I believe in having fun and that humor is key to good morale and performance. ,

The Leadership Philosophy of Bob McDonald, Vice Chairman of Procter & Gamble

Throughout my education, military, and business careers; there are a few principles in which I believe deeply that drive my behavior everyday.

  1. Everyone wants to succeed. I have never in all my life, in any career, in any country, at any time, met a person who tries to fail. Everyone I have met wants to succeed. So the job of the leader is to help people succeed.
  2. Success is contagious. A leader’s job is to catch people succeeding, even if the success is a small one, and to use that small success to build a virtuous cycle of ever larger successes. Since success is contagious, on success will always lead to another, and one successful person will always influence another to be successful. Our job as leaders is to start the fire that fuels the virtuous cycle of success. ,
